On 31 July 2026, Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell secured £253,255.64 in Home Office funding to launch a new domestic abuse and violence against women and girls (VAWG) prevention pilot in Knowsley.
The funding was awarded to Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council (KMBC) to deliver an early intervention and prevention programme running through to January 2027. The project aims to stop domestic abuse before it escalates, target individuals at risk of causing harm, and improve long-term safeguarding for victims and survivors across Merseyside.
Key elements of the pilot programme include:
Perpetrator Intervention: Expanding Knowsley’s established Multi-Agency Tasking and Coordination (MATAC) process and perpetrator pathways to manage high-risk offenders and reduce reoffending.
Youth Education & Awareness: Rolling out healthy relationship programmes and awareness campaigns for young people.
Child Support Services: Enhancing recovery and support services for children affected by domestic abuse.
Professional Training: Delivering specialist frontline training in Knowsley, with select modules offered across all five Merseyside local authority areas.
The PCC worked with Knowsley Council to redirect the Home Office funding after the charity previously tasked with delivery, Causeway, unexpectedly closed in June 2026. Knowsley was selected for the pilot because it has the region’s only operational perpetrator programme and a MATAC structure capable of immediate expansion.
