In 2010, a 25-year-old man was sentenced to four years and four months’ imprisonment at Swindon Crown Court after systematically abusing a 14-year-old girl over an 18-month period and fathering her child.

Paul Wood, of Crawford Close, Freshbrook, Swindon, appeared before the court for sentence after pleading guilty to two counts of sexual activity with a child.

Prosecutor Rosie Collins outlined that Wood had moved from Swindon to live in Chippenham, where he entered into a relationship with the victim’s mother. During this period, Wood initiated sexual abuse against the 14-year-old girl, repeatedly subjecting her to unlawful sexual activity over the course of a year and a half.

Approximately six months into the abuse, the child became pregnant and subsequently gave birth. While initial claims suggested a teenage school peer was the father, Wiltshire Police launched an investigation after disclosures were made. Forensic DNA testing was carried out, definitively proving that Wood had fathered the baby.

When interviewed under caution, Wood claimed he had been drinking alcohol at a social gathering when the sexual conduct first occurred.

In mitigation, defence counsel Virginia Cornwall stated that Wood accepted the prosecution case in full and acknowledged that as the adult in the situation, he should have known better, noting personal vulnerability and struggles with depression.

Passing sentence, Judge Euan Ambrose condemned the defendant’s conduct and attitude: “The consequences of your behaviour will be with her for many, many years to come. It was a life changing occurrence on a 14-year-old’s life and that is part of the seriousness of this offence. I have read the pre-sentence report and there is a singular lack of remorse on your part. You seem to blame her rather than take responsibility.”

Judge Ambrose sentenced Wood to an immediate custodial term of four years and four months’ imprisonment.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered that Wood be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for the rest of his life and imposed an indefinite prohibition barring him from any employment or activity involving children. Reports note that following his release, Wood has resided in the Calne area of Wiltshire.

In 2026, Paul Wood now lives in Calne. He is back with the mother of the girls he abused and went to prison for and they are all living together in a dysfunctional family unit.

Recently the family failed to supervise a young child who got his by a delivery van and died. The CPS refused to prosecute as they stated it was not in the public interest.
