In October 2026, a 50-year-old man from Portslade was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment at Lewes Crown Court after being found guilty of rape, coercive control, harassment, and breaching a court non-molestation order.

Paul Savage, of Carlton Terrace, Portslade, appeared before the court for sentence on Friday 23 October 2026 following a contested trial.

The prosecution detailed how Savage subjected a woman known to him to years of sustained domestic abuse. The court heard the complainant lived in severe distress and feared for the safety of her children as a result of Savage’s volatile conduct, physical violence, and sexual abuse. Savage displayed extreme jealousy, closely monitoring her everyday activities, tracking her physical location, and subjecting her to incessant contact.

When the victim brought an end to the relationship, Savage launched a persistent stalking campaign. He repeatedly drove past her residential address and loitered nearby in deliberate attempts to intimidate her, breaching both active police bail conditions and a formal non-molestation order issued by the court.

Sussex Police arrested Savage, and he was remanded in custody until trial proceedings commenced. In January 2026, Savage was formally charged with intentional strangulation, possession of Class A and Class C controlled substances, stalking involving fear of violence, breach of a non-molestation order, and controlling and coercive behaviour, with a further charge of rape added in February 2026.

Following a trial at Lewes Crown Court, a jury convicted Savage on 10 July 2026 of rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, harassment, and breaching the non-molestation order.

Passing sentence, the Crown Court judge addressed the prolonged emotional harm, intimidation, and violation inflicted upon the victim, sentencing Savage to an immediate custodial term of eight years’ imprisonment.

In addition to the custodial sentence, Savage was made subject to indefinite notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register and statutory protective orders prohibiting any contact with the victim.
