Paul Rajasegaram, aged 33, of Marylebone, central London, was sentenced to two years and three months’ imprisonment at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday, 19 May 2021, after pleading guilty to five counts relating to the making and distribution of indecent images of children.
The court heard that Rajasegaram, a former primary school teacher who appeared as a contestant on the BBC television programme The Voice in 2014, used the pseudonym London_boylover69 to access online chat platforms. Investigations by the National Crime Agency (NCA) commenced after officers identified messages in which Rajasegaram referred to two of his pupils, aged 10 and 12, as “really cute”.
NCA officers traced Rajasegaram’s identity and executed an arrest warrant at his Marylebone residence in January 2018. Following his arrest, Rajasegaram was suspended from his teaching position at a school in Tower Hamlets and from a weekend performing arts school.
A forensic analysis of an Apple laptop computer seized from the address uncovered 58 indecent images and 10 videos depicting child sexual abuse. The recovered files included Category A material shared over Skype involving children as young as three years of age, as well as video footage depicting the rape of an eight-year-old boy.
Appearing before Southwark Crown Court, Rajasegaram pleaded guilty to:
- Three counts of making indecent images of children
- Two counts of distributing indecent images of children
The presiding judge sentenced Rajasegaram to a total custodial sentence of two years and three months.
