Craig Crowther, from Northwich, Cheshire, who was jailed in 2022 for the contact sexual abuse of a child under 13, producing abuse footage, and conspiring online to commit further offences, has been discharged from prison into the community.

Crowther was apprehended following an intelligence-led operation by the National Crime Agency (NCA). Operating behind the digital moniker “craggy2014”, Crowther engaged in discussions with other sexual offenders on messaging networks, discussing his sexual interest in young children. In one exchange, Crowther disclosed that he had direct physical access to a child he had previously assaulted, sharing illicit material to corroborate his claims. In another exchange, he bragged about capturing indecent images of a child whilst she was asleep and actively discussed logistical plans to subject her to further sexual abuse.

NCA investigators arrested Crowther on 21 July 2020. A digital forensic extraction of his mobile phone revealed 56 indecent images of children spanning categories A, B, and C. Crucially, 35 of the recovered images had been captured by Crowther himself, comprising video thumbnails depicting him carrying out contact sexual assaults on the victim. Investigators determined that the stills were remnants of recorded footage that Crowther had created and subsequently deleted. Crowther also transmitted photographs of the child’s clothing to online networks to establish his ongoing access.

Under UK legislation, all victims of sexual offences are protected by lifelong statutory anonymity.

Appearing at Chester Magistrates’ Court on 11 February 2022, Crowther entered formal guilty pleas to:

  • Three counts of sexually assaulting a child under 13 by touching
  • Three counts of making indecent photographs of children
  • Two counts of taking indecent photographs of children
  • Two counts of distributing indecent photographs of children

At Chester Crown Court on 14 April 2022, the judge reduced his starting sentence from six years and six months down to four years and four months’ imprisonment to reflect early guilty pleas.

Public records now confirm Crowther has been discharged from custody to serve the remainder of his term in the community. Upon release, Crowther remains subject to a four-year licence supervision period, an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) restricting his contact with children and use of digital devices, and mandatory lifetime notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register.
