Christopher Brain, the former priest who led Sheffield’s controversial Nine O’Clock Service, has been found guilty of rape and four counts of indecent assault following a retrial at Inner London Crown Court.

The verdicts mark the culmination of a protracted criminal prosecution, bringing Brain’s total convictions to 22 sexual offences committed against 13 different women between 1983 and 1995.

Between 1986 and 1995, Brain, now of Wilmslow, Cheshire, directed the Nine O’Clock Service (NOS), an experimental Church of England initiative that attracted hundreds of young congregants by integrating Christian worship with rave culture, electronic music, and audiovisual installations. However, prosecutors outlined how the movement rapidly transformed into an insular, personality-led cult driven by Brain’s manipulation and control.

Prosecutor Tim Clark KC detailed how Brain established a “culture of fear” within the group to abuse a “staggering number of women from his congregation.” The court heard that a select home support group of female followers, referred to internally as the “homebase team” and colloquially dubbed the “Lycra Lovelies” or “Lycra Nuns,” was established to maintain Brain’s household.

Witnesses described visiting his home to find Brain surrounded by female congregants wearing lingerie. One witness testified to being reprimanded if her clothing was judged insufficiently provocative, recounting how she was ordered to stand naked while Brain remained fully clothed. The court was told Brain exploited this domestic framework under the guise of pastoral care, sexually touching women under the pretext of therapeutic massages and coercing them to perform sexual acts while putting him to bed.

Jurors at the retrial heard evidence regarding four specific victims, including how Brain lured one woman to his property and raped her inside an attic bedroom.

Under UK legislation, all victims of sexual offences are protected by lifelong statutory anonymity.

Brain denied all charges, maintaining his innocence throughout legal proceedings. In August 2025, an initial jury convicted Brain of 17 counts of indecent assault relating to nine victims, while acquitting him of 15 counts and failing to reach verdicts on five outstanding charges.

The prosecution elected to retry the five unresolved counts. On Friday, following deliberations, the retrial jury unanimously found Brain guilty of the single count of rape and all four counts of indecent assault.

Brain was remanded pending a formal sentencing date at Inner London Crown Court, where he faces a substantial custodial sentence and lifetime notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register.
