Matthew Elvy, aged 43, of no fixed address, has been sentenced to more than two years in prison at Exeter Crown Court after sexually assaulting a woman who had shown concern for his welfare during a bus journey between Exeter and Teignmouth.
The court heard that Elvy had been drinking vodka and acting in an erratic manner during the journey from Exeter. When another passenger departed the vehicle, the female victim was left sitting alone near him. Upon arriving in Teignmouth, Elvy pressured the woman to get off the bus with him, stating that he would follow her home if she did not comply.
After stepping off the vehicle, Elvy cornered the woman, demanded a hug, and forced his hands beneath her shirt to grab her breasts. When the victim pulled away, Elvy laughed and claimed that she enjoyed the contact.
Under UK legislation, all victims of sexual offences are protected by lifelong statutory anonymity.
Elvy pleaded guilty to sexual assault and breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which had been imposed in 2020 following an assault on another woman.
Judge David Evans described Elvy as cunning and emotionally manipulative, noting that he took little responsibility for his behaviour. The court sentenced Elvy to 22 months in prison for the assault and the order breach, and activated an additional 14 weeks from a previous suspended sentence to run consecutively, resulting in a total custodial term of more than 25 months.
