In November 2022, Mark Alderson, then aged 37, of Davidson Road, Darlington, was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court to nine years and nine months in prison after pleading guilty to sexual assault and two counts of rape.

The court heard details regarding a Cleveland Police investigation into an attack on a schoolgirl. Prosecutors outlined how Alderson offered the victim a lift home from a party before driving to a secluded side street. Alderson then sexually assaulted the child and raped her twice inside the passenger seat of his vehicle.

Following the attack, Alderson contacted the victim’s mother via message to give a false explanation for the child’s distress before dropping her off at home. Upon arrival, the victim immediately disclosed the sexual assault to her family, who contacted the police.

Cleveland Police officers arrested Alderson hours later. Although he initially claimed the sexual activity was consensual, he subsequently entered guilty pleas to all charges.

In November 2022, the presiding judge handed Alderson a custodial sentence of nine years and nine months, alongside a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order prohibiting contact with any child under 16, and a lifetime restraining order, with all details catalogued on the UK Register Database for public record transparency.
