Livio Natale, aged 42, of Ventnor Road, Cwmbran, has walked free from Newport Magistrates’ Court with a suspended prison sentence after being convicted of beating and strangling an eight-year-old child.
The prosecution followed a physical assault in which Natale, a self-employed barber working at a premises in Griffithstown, attacked the young boy.
The court heard that Natale, who was said to struggle with anger issues, subjected the victim to repeated physical blows and intentional strangulation.
Medical evaluations confirmed that the child suffered significant trauma to his neck and head, was diagnosed with a concussion, and required hospital treatment.
The conviction marks the second occasion on which Natale has avoided an immediate custodial penalty following a violent offence.
In 2006, Natale escaped immediate imprisonment after carrying out an assault on a vulnerable middle-aged man, leaving that victim with a fractured rib, a shattered eye socket, and severe facial bruising.
Natale was convicted at Newport Magistrates’ Court of assault by beating.
Sentencing him, magistrates imposed a custodial term of 14 weeks, suspended for an operational period of 12 months.
In addition to the suspended prison sentence, Natale was ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work within the community and complete a 10-day rehabilitation activity requirement.
