One of the most bizarre and controversial incidents in Premier League history took place at the Stadium of Light as Sunderland defeated Liverpool 1–0. Just five minutes into the match, Sunderland striker Darren Bent struck a low shot towards goal. The ball hit a bright red Liverpool-branded beach ball that had been tossed onto the pitch by a 16-year-old travelling Liverpool supporter.
The deflection completely bamboozled Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, diverting the match ball into the back of the net. Meanwhile, the teenage fan who threw the beach ball received severe online backlash and death threats before public sympathy eventually shifted.
