A 33-year-old Wrexham county man has received an immediate custodial sentence of eight years at Mold Crown Court after admitting to sexually assaulting a woman by penetration and inflicting severe head trauma during violent domestic assaults.
James Doyle, residing at Coronation Drive, Chirk, appeared in the dock for sentence on Thursday 5 November 2026 having formally entered guilty pleas partway through a Crown Court trial held in September.
The prosecution detailed a series of violent incidents in which Doyle inflicted brutal physical injuries upon the female complainant. During one sustained assault, Doyle threw the woman to the ground before repeatedly kicking her directly in the face and head. He then compressed his hands around her neck, carrying out intentional strangulation until she lost consciousness.
Emergency medical examinations established that Doyle’s violence left the victim with a fractured nose and internal intracranial bleeding within her skull, injuries which clinicians and detectives noted had the potential to cause significant and lasting harm.
During the September trial proceedings at Mold Crown Court, Doyle abandoned his defence and pleaded guilty to:
One count of sexual assault by penetration
Three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH)
One count of intentional strangulation
Investigating officer Detective Constable Alison Lee, of North Wales Police, commended the survivor’s resolve:
“Doyle’s guilty pleas in this case reflects the courage of the victim in coming forward and her bravery throughout the investigation. I would also like to thank the witnesses who came forward to support the investigation. Doyle inflicted brutal violence on the victim, leaving her with physical injuries that could have caused significant and lasting harm. I hope this outcome today provides some measure of reassurance and closure, as she continues her recovery. Tackling violence against women and girls remains a foremost priority for North Wales Police. We are committed to identifying perpetrators, pursuing justice, and ensuring that victims receive the protection and support they need.”
Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, the survivor is protected by mandatory, lifelong statutory anonymity. Any publication, broadcast, or public dissemination of information capable of leading to her identification is strictly prohibited under UK law.
Sentencing Doyle, the presiding judge highlighted the severity of the head trauma and the seriousness of the penetrative sexual assault, ordering him to serve an immediate prison sentence of eight years. The term includes a concurrent custodial period of five years and eight months specifically for the sexual assault by penetration.
In addition to the eight-year prison sentence, the court ordered that Doyle be made subject to statutory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register for life and imposed an indefinite restraining order barring him from contacting the survivor.
