James Conroy, aged 43, of no fixed abode but from the Ely area, was sentenced to 22 years and five months’ imprisonment at Cambridge Crown Court on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, following convictions for CSE, CSA, and class A drug supply.
The court heard that Conroy groomed and exploited a teenage girl, with initial evidence uncovered during a Cambridgeshire Constabulary search of a property in Soham in September 2025. Following further disclosures, Conroy was re-arrested on suspicion of raping the child and bailed with strict non-contact conditions.
Conroy breached these conditions by sending threatening and abusive messages across multiple social media platforms. The messages included threats of violence with a meat cleaver, threats to kill individuals known to the victim, and offers of cocaine if the child agreed to meet him. Officers intercepted Conroy in his vehicle at a garage in Ely, recovering 12 wraps of cocaine, cash, and mobile devices.
Following a Crown Court trial, Conroy was convicted of:
- One count of rape
- One count of engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour
- One count of witness intimidation
- One count of offering to supply class A drugs (cocaine)
- One count of supplying class A drugs (cocaine)
- Two counts of possession with intent to supply class A drugs (cocaine)
The judge handed Conroy a total custodial sentence of 22 years and five months. Conroy was also made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), a restraining order, and indefinite notification on the Sex Offenders Register.
