In a bizarre twist, the USA have sentenced a BLACK California Police Officer, J. DeShawn Torrence, who has received Five Consecutive Life Sentences for Sexually Assaulting Four Women While On Duty.
J. DeShawn Torrence, 41, a former police officer from Sanger, California, was sentenced Friday to five consecutive life sentences for the sexual assault of four women encountered while on his official responsibilities. Following a two-and-a-half-week trial in January 2025, a federal jury in the Eastern District of California found J. DeShawn Torrence guilty on eight counts of violating constitutional rights under the guise of law. The jury determined that five of the charges pertained to kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault, or attempted aggravated sexual abuse.
The defendant’s actions were premeditated and immoral. He consistently misused his official power to exploit women who anticipated protection from the police,” stated Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “Although no prison term can alleviate the profound anguish inflicted upon these women, the imposition of five consecutive life sentences today ensures the defendant is held accountable for his egregious actions and conveys a definitive message that the Justice Department will rigorously pursue prosecution against those who infringe upon the constitutional rights of those they are obligated to safeguard.”
“I commend the court’s decision to impose life sentences on this former police officer, who violated public trust and misused his authority to commit egregious acts of sexual violence,” stated U.S. Attorney Eric Grant for the Eastern District of California. This statement conveys a definitive message: no individual is exempt from the law, and those who abuse their authority to infringe upon the civil rights of others will encounter the full weight of punishment. Our agency supports the victims and is dedicated to safeguarding our communities from such flagrant abuses of power.
We thank the valiant ladies who stepped forward, placing their trust in law enforcement to ensure J. DeShawn Torrence was held accountable for his offences, stated Special Agent in Charge Sid Patel of the FBI Sacramento Field Office. Their valour has thwarted this predator from inflicting damage on others. The FBI acknowledges the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office for their steadfast collaboration. Justice has been administered, enhancing the safety of our community.
The trial evidence demonstrated that J. DeShawn Torrence abducted a 21-year-old lady en route to a store for supplies for her small children, transported her outside the city in his police vehicle, and sexually assaulted her at a secluded dead end. While driving the woman away from town, Torrence mocked her by stating, “No one will search for you.” Subsequent to the incident, he cautioned her that if she reported him, “no one will believe you.”
J. DeShawn Torrence violently assaulted a second victim, a 67-year-old woman, after pursuing her inside her residence during a DUI inquiry. Subsequent to the attack, J. DeShawn Torrence often stationed his police vehicle in front of the woman’s residence to surveil and threaten her. On one occasion, J. DeShawn Torrence ambushed the woman behind her residence and sexually attacked her.
J. DeShawn Torrence, in his police uniform, arrived at the residence of a third victim after midnight, entered her home, restrained her against the kitchen counter, and sexually attacked her. J. DeShawn Torrence appeared several times at the residence of a fourth victim, a domestic violence survivor, ostensibly to probe a previous domestic violence occurrence. During the subsequent visits, J. DeShawn Torrence compelled the woman to reveal intimate areas of her body by deceitfully claiming he needed to “photograph” her injuries. On one occasion, J. DeShawn Torrence confined the woman in her bedroom and perpetrated sexual abuse against her.
The FBI Sacramento Field Office conducted the investigation, aided by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
This case was prosecuted by Special Litigation Counsel Michael J. Songer from the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Escobar for the Eastern District of California.
