George Woolgar-Brown, aged 30, of Lyminster Avenue, Brighton, East Sussex, has been found guilty of sexual assault by penetration at Brighton Crown Court following a trial.
The court heard that the non-recent offence took place at an address in Brighton where Woolgar-Brown had stayed overnight after attending a wake. The victim, a woman known to Woolgar-Brown, permitted him to stay at the property. However, during the night, Woolgar-Brown entered her bedroom without consent, got into her bed, and carried out a serious sexual assault by penetration.
During the trial proceedings, the jury heard testimony describing the impact of the attack, with the victim explaining how she was overwhelmed with shock and froze while the assault was taking place. Immediately after the incident occurred, the victim left the bedroom to get away from him, and Woolgar-Brown departed the address shortly afterwards.
Sussex Police launched a criminal investigation after the victim came forward to report the attack. Detectives from the force gathered witness accounts and compiled the evidence to bring the matter before the Crown Court after Woolgar-Brown entered a not guilty plea to the charge.
On 13 August 2026, following the conclusion of the trial, the jury convicted Woolgar-Brown of:
- One count of sexual assault by penetration
Following the verdict, the presiding judge remanded Woolgar-Brown in custody. He is scheduled to appear back at Brighton Crown Court on 6 November 2026 to receive his sentence.
