On Thursday, 8 January 2026, the Offender Database reported that Gareth Humphreys, 75, of Ashbrook, Brackla, Bridgend, was sentenced at Newport Crown Court for the possession and creation of over 5,000 indecent images of children. Humphreys, a retired officer with 30 years of service in South Wales Police and six years with the Ministry of Defence, used his background in authority to manipulate his victim.

The court heard that Humphreys held a stash of more than 5,000 indecent images across four electronic devices, including laptops and phones. Among these were 700 unique photos and videos of a young girl under the age of 13, shown in various states of undress. Humphreys systematically groomed the child, telling her that police “would not believe her” if she spoke out, effectively weaponising his former career to ensure her silence. The abuse came to light only after the victim found the courage to confide in friends.

During the sentencing hearing, the victim’s mother provided a harrowing statement, explaining that her daughter had been left feeling “guilty and dirty” and had expressed a desire to take her own life. Despite Humphreys’ claims that the photos were “innocuous,” his internet history revealed predatory search terms such as “older men strip young girls.” Recorder Aidan Eardley KC noted that Humphreys’ motivation was clearly sexual and that he had deliberately dissuaded the child from reporting his actions.

Gareth Humphreys was sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment, suspended for 24 months. This means he avoided immediate jail time, provided he adheres to strict conditions. He was also required to complete a 25-day rehabilitation activity.

As a result of his convictions for making indecent images of a child, Humphreys has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register. He is also subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and a restraining order for 10 years, legally prohibiting him from contacting the victim or her family. He is managed under the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) in the Bridgend area, where South Wales Police and the National Probation Service will monitor his residency and digital activities to prevent any further risk to the community.
