Elliot Bulman, aged 22, of Peel Hall Road, Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, has been sentenced to an extended term of 20 years at Bolton Crown Court after being convicted of a prolonged campaign of physical violence, strangulation, and rape against his former partner.
The court heard Bulman subjected the victim to pervasive controlling and coercive behaviour throughout her pregnancy and following the birth of their child.
Bulman took total control of her finances, monitored her digital communications, dictated what clothing she could wear, locked her inside their home when he socialised, and attempted to prevent male doctors from conducting essential medical examinations.
The physical violence commenced while the woman was heavily pregnant.
During a dispute as they moved baby furniture upstairs, Bulman struck the victim in the back with a chest of drawers, causing her to collapse, before dragging her along the floor by her hair.
The physical abuse rapidly escalated into repeated punches, kicks, and serious sexual attacks.
The brutality continued unabated after their child was born.
The victim reported that Bulman repeatedly assaulted her and threw household objects at her while she held their newborn baby in her arms.
He issued explicit threats to kill both her and the infant, and in one degrading incident, spat in her face while she cradled the baby, forcing her to remain seated covered in saliva for 45 minutes while berating her.
The victim eventually escaped the home with only the clothes she was wearing, but Bulman continued his intimidation by pursuing her to her workplace, compelling colleagues to contact Greater Manchester Police.
Bulman entered guilty pleas to coercive and controlling behaviour and two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Following a contested trial at Bolton Crown Court, jurors convicted him of:
- Two counts of rape
- Four counts of causing a person to engage in sexual activity
- One count of assault by penetration
- One count of making threats to kill
- Four counts of non-fatal strangulation
Sentencing him, Judge Jon Close described Bulman’s conduct as a deliberate and sadistic campaign of domination aimed at breaking the victim down, telling him he had shown neither remorse nor empathy while attempting to claim the victim provoked his behaviour.
Deemed a dangerous offender posing a high risk of future harm, Bulman was handed an extended sentence of 20 years, comprising a 15-year custodial term (180 months) and an extended licence period of five years.
Release Calculation: Because Bulman was categorised as a dangerous offender and received an extended determinate sentence, automatic release provisions do not apply. He must serve a minimum of two-thirds of the 15-year custodial term (10 years / 120 months) in prison custody before becoming eligible to apply for parole. His release remains subject to the assessment of the Parole Board, which must determine that he no longer poses a risk of serious harm to the public. If released, he will serve the remainder of the custodial sentence plus the five-year extension on licence under strict probation monitoring.
