When someone puts down a substance, whether it’s alcohol, opioids, stimulants, or any compulsive behaviour that previously held their life hostage, the early days are often described as pure war. You withdraw, you may shake, you may sweat, and you endure the excruciating task of facing reality without an anaesthetic.
And then… something strange happens. The fog lifts. Your sleep returns. Your brain begins firing dopamine in response to ordinary things again: sunlight, food, conversation. In recovery circles, this is widely known as the “Pink Cloud.”
You feel untouchable. You feel enlightened. You’ve conquered the demon that ruined your relationships and emptied your bank account.
You think: “If I can beat this, I can do anything.” And that exact thought is where the real danger begins.
Because what many people fail to realise is that addiction was never just about the chemical. The substance was simply the coping mechanism for a mind already running on dysregulation, fear, and profound self-obsession.
When you remove the substance without dismantling the underlying architecture of your psyche, the ego doesn’t dissolve. It mutates. It hijacks your sobriety. It turns the very act of not drinking or not using into a badge of supreme moral superiority.
