Gurpreet Singh, aged 33, of Littleover, Derby, has been sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment at Chesterfield Court after being convicted of raping a woman and abandoning her partially clothed and unconscious in a street.

The offence took place in May 2022 after the victim had been on a night out. During the subsequent investigation by Derbyshire Constabulary, detectives reviewed CCTV footage which captured Singh walking along a street holding the woman up as he led her towards an address in Derby. The video evidence showed the victim was barefoot and had no clothing on the lower half of her body.

The victim regained consciousness the following morning disorientated and lying in a street she did not recognise. Her underwear, shoes, and socks were missing, and she had been placed into a pair of trousers that did not belong to her.

Under UK legislation, all victims of sexual offences are protected by lifelong statutory anonymity.

Following his arrest and charge, Singh entered a not guilty plea and maintained that no rape had taken place. The case proceeded to a contested trial in July, where the jury deliberated and returned a guilty verdict on the charge of rape.

On 17 September, the presiding judge sentenced Singh to an immediate determinate custodial term of 12 years. Under statutory sentencing provisions governing determinate sentences of seven years or more for serious sexual offences, Singh must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible to be considered for parole release.

The court also made Singh subject to an indefinite restraining order prohibiting him from making contact with the victim, alongside mandatory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register for the rest of his life.
