A 48-year-old man from Wythenshawe has been handed a 28-year extended sentence at Manchester Crown Court after being found guilty of filming the rape and sexual abuse of six children and distributing the footage across global dark web networks.
Darren Welsby appeared for sentence on Tuesday 20 October 2026 following an extensive international investigation led by the National Crime Agency (NCA) in collaboration with Australian law enforcement and INTERPOL.
The prosecution outlined that between 2012 and 2020, Welsby carried out a sustained campaign of child sexual exploitation involving six separate victims. He repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted children, secretly recorded the abuse, and coerced young victims into participating in sexual activity in front of recording equipment. Welsby then uploaded and circulated the resulting material among illicit online forums.
The breakthrough in identifying Welsby emerged when Australian investigators uploaded illicit media to an international INTERPOL database. Specialist officers identified anatomical and physical markers on the perpetrator—specifically the contours and characteristics of his hands—which matched material Welsby had previously uploaded to public adult websites. Digital tracking of an online username across multiple platforms corroborated his real-world identity.
In August 2020, National Crime Agency officers detained Welsby at Manchester Airport as he moved through the terminal. Officers seized his personal telephone before executing a search warrant at his former residential address in Wythenshawe.
The search resulted in the recovery of 58 evidentiary exhibits, including 10 digital devices holding over 30,000 child sexual abuse images and videos, some dating back as far as 2005. Forensic analysis confirmed that Welsby had personally produced large quantities of the seized content. The recovered files comprised:
Approximately 4,700 Category A images and videos (the most severe severity band)
4,500 Category B images
24,000 Category C images
18 extreme pornographic images involving animals
Because the hardware originally used to film the abuse was no longer available, the NCA instructed expert forensic anthropologists to conduct detailed body-mapping comparisons. The specialists compared footage of the unidentified perpetrator against custody photographs and personal images of Welsby, establishing conclusively that he was the individual shown abusing the children.
Welsby pleaded not guilty to the indictment, forcing the case through a contested two-week trial at Manchester Crown Court. On 10 July, the jury dismissed his defence and returned unanimous guilty verdicts on all 18 counts, including the rape of a girl under 13, sexual assault of a child, inciting sexual activity with a child, making and possessing indecent images, and possession of extreme pornography.
Passing sentence on 20 October 2026, the Crown Court judge designated Welsby a dangerous sexual offender who presented an exceptional and enduring danger to children. The judge handed down an extended determinate sentence of 28 years, ordering him to serve 23 years in immediate custody before being considered for release by the Parole Board, with an extended licence period of five years.
The court further imposed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), confirmed his lifelong registration on the Sex Offenders Register under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, and permanently barred him from regulated activity involving children or vulnerable adults.
Under the provisions of Section 49 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 and the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, all child victims and complainants connected to criminal proceedings are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any details, names, addresses, educational facilities, or photographs capable of leading to public identification is strictly prohibited under UK law.
Welsby stood convicted of 18 counts, including:
Rape of a child under 13
Sexual assault of a child under 13
Inciting a child under 13 into sexual activity
Making, taking, and possessing indecent images of children (Categories A, B, and C)
Possession of extreme pornographic images
Sentencing outcome and statutory measures:
28-year extended determinate sentence (23 years’ custody and five years on extended licence)
Indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO)
Mandatory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register for life under the Sexual Offences Act 2003
