In this report from October 2022, Craig Neal Jenkins, aged 52, of Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, was sentenced to two years and two months’ imprisonment (26 months) at Stafford Crown Court on Wednesday, 19 October 2022, after admitting multiple child abuse image offences and order breaches.
The criminal investigation commenced on 2 August 2022 when officers from Staffordshire Police’s Sexual Offender Management Unit conducted a compliance inspection at Jenkins’ address.
The court heard that Jenkins was subject to a 10-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) imposed in 2014.
During the inspection, officers analysed his mobile handset and discovered deleted WhatsApp messaging threads containing an indecent photograph of a child.
Although Jenkins stated he had no other electronics, a physical search of the property led to the discovery and seizure of a camcorder and several camcorder tapes storing indecent images of children.
Digital forensic analysis established that Jenkins had deliberately violated his order by deleting chat histories, failing to declare electronic devices, and utilising incognito private web browsers to circumvent detection.
Appearing before Stafford Crown Court, Jenkins pleaded guilty to:
- Three counts of making an indecent photograph of a child
- Two counts of breaching a Sexual Offences Prevention Order
The presiding judge handed Jenkins a total custodial sentence of 26 months’ imprisonment.
The court also imposed a further Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and ordered that Jenkins remain on the Sex Offenders Register for a period of 10 years.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation for sexual offenders, Jenkins was required to serve two-thirds (17.3 months) of his 26-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for automatic statutory release on licence. His projected release date fell in March 2024, whereupon he remained subject to licence supervision in the community until the expiration of the full term in December 2024.
