A 58-year-old convicted sex offender has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment at Chester Crown Court after admitting to attempting to groom a child online, possessing extreme pornography, and distributing indecent photographs of children.

Christopher Hall, of no fixed address, appeared for sentence on 22 July 2026 following an enforcement and digital forensic investigation conducted by police.

The prosecution detailed that Hall, who had previously been convicted of sexual offences, was detected engaging in fresh illicit conduct across digital devices. Specialist cyber investigators recovered repositories of child sexual abuse material that Hall had unlawfully downloaded, created, and distributed to other online contacts.

Examinations of his hardware revealed:

Four counts of making indecent photographs of children

Three counts of distributing indecent photographs of children

One count of possessing indecent photographs of children

One count of possessing extreme pornography depicting animals

Furthermore, forensic analysis of Hall’s digital communication logs proved that he had actively targeted a child, attempting to initiate sexual conversation and illicit communication while knowing the complainant was underage.

Confronted with the digital evidence, Hall entered guilty pleas to all ten offences on the indictment.

Passing sentence on 22 July 2026, the Crown Court judge highlighted Hall’s established offending history and the acute danger he presented to young people online, handing down an immediate custodial term of three years’ imprisonment.

The court further directed that Hall remain subject to indefinite, lifelong notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register, barred him from working with children or vulnerable adults, and ordered strict statutory licence conditions to manage his risk upon eventual release.

Under the provisions of Section 49 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 and the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, all child victims and complainants connected to criminal proceedings are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any details, names, addresses, educational facilities, or photographs capable of leading to public identification is strictly prohibited under UK law.

Hall stood convicted of:

Four counts of making indecent photographs of children

Three counts of distributing indecent photographs of children

Possession of indecent photographs of children

Attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child

Possession of extreme pornographic images involving animals

Sentencing outcome and statutory measures:

Three years’ immediate custody

Mandatory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register for life under the Sexual Offences Act 2003

Permanent barring from working with children or vulnerable adults (Children’s and Adults’ Barred Lists)

Strict post-custodial statutory licence supervision conditions enforceable upon release from custody
