In 2026, a mother and father were sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court after their eight-week-old baby boy was left with permanent, catastrophic brain injuries that mean he will never be able to sit up, stand, or walk.

Brogan Jones, of Roundhouse Close, Nantyglo, and Adam Edwards, of Beech Tree Crescent, Blaina, appeared before the court for sentencing following convictions for causing or allowing a child to suffer serious physical harm and child cruelty through neglect.

The court heard that the catastrophic assault took place on 16 June 2023 at the couple’s home in Nantyglo, Blaenau Gwent, when their son was just eight weeks old. Medical examinations revealed that the infant was subjected to a violent attack in which he was beaten and shaken, suffering at least two forcible blows to the head that fractured his skull in two separate places.

Further inquiries revealed that weeks earlier, on 30 May 2023, the infant had been taken to hospital with an injury that was later identified as a fractured right arm, which had not been detected during the initial clinical examination.

Medical experts detailed the devastating, life-altering consequences of the violence inflicted upon the defenceless baby. The court was told that the severe traumatic brain injury has left the boy blind, with his voluntary physical movement permanently impaired to the extent that he will never be able to sit, stand, or walk independently for the rest of his life.

Although both parents were convicted in connection with the horrific abuse, the court heard that either Edwards or Jones inflicted the catastrophic injuries while the other failed to take steps to protect the vulnerable child.

Passing sentence, the Crown Court judge addressed the extreme gravity of the physical trauma and neglect suffered by the eight-week-old victim.

Edwards was sentenced to a total of nine years’ imprisonment. Jones received a three-year custodial sentence, suspended for three years.
