In 2022, Amer Salamat, the Fenham Sex Offender, a taxi driver, was registered as a sex offender following an attempt to kiss a customer and inappropriately touch her leg.
Amer Salamat lectured the woman on religion, expressed his affection for her, and provided his phone number.
The 55-year-old was transporting the victim to her residence in County Durham after collecting her from a taxi stand in Newcastle city centre.
The woman promptly informed her relatives of the incident, which was subsequently reported to the police.
Amer Salamat, residing on Wingrove Road in Fenham, refuted allegations of sexual assault but was convicted after a trial at Newcastle Crown Court.
Amer Salamat received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and was registered as a sex offender for seven years. He has received a lifetime ban from employment as a cab driver.
Detective Constable Christopher Bentham of Durham Constabulary’s Digital Investigations Unit stated: “The victim in this case has exhibited remarkable courage throughout the investigation—from promptly coming forward and speaking out to providing evidence in court and confronting Salamat.”
Amer Salamat egregiously exploited his position of trust as a cab driver by attempting to manipulate a vulnerable woman who was alone in his vehicle.”
