A 36-year-old man has been convicted of rape at Leeds Crown Court following a violent sexual assault committed in the Hyde Park area of Leeds earlier this year.
Uvesh Vahora, of no fixed abode, was found guilty by a jury on Tuesday 3 November 2026 following the conclusion of a Crown Court trial.
The offence took place at a residential property on Autumn Avenue on the night of 9 April 2026 and was subject to an extensive public appeal at the time. The court heard that during the attack, the female victim was subjected to a terrifying ordeal and was left in genuine fear for her life, believing Vahora intended to kill her.
Following the assault, the victim disclosed what had happened to friends before notifying West Yorkshire Police. The woman was able to direct officers to the Autumn Avenue address where the offence occurred, enabling police to arrest Vahora within five hours of the incident taking place. He has remained remanded in custody since his initial detention.
The court heard that Vahora, whose self-defined ethnicity is Asian Indian, had entered the United Kingdom on a student visa.
Detective Inspector Tom Crosfill, of West Yorkshire Police, commented following the verdict:
“Vahora has subjected the victim to a terrifying experience with her being in genuine fear for her life thinking that he was going to kill her. After disclosing the offence to friends, she contacted police with officers arresting Vahora within around five hours of this offence taking place. He has been held on remand since that time. In the meantime, those working on this investigation have gathered the evidence including victim and witness statements, CCTV and digital lines of enquiry that has led to Vahora’s conviction. I understand how incredibly difficult it can be to report rape and other sexual offences and I really hope that this conviction demonstrates how seriously an offence of this nature is treated from the outset.”
Following the conclusion of the trial, Vahora was convicted of:
One count of rape
Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, the complainant is protected by mandatory, lifelong statutory anonymity. Any publication, broadcast, or public dissemination of information capable of leading to her identification is strictly prohibited under UK law.
The trial judge remanded Vahora in custody to await sentencing, which is scheduled to take place at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday 11 November 2026.
