A 36-year-old Hampshire man has received an immediate custodial sentence of eight years at Southampton Crown Court after being convicted of raping a woman at a residential address in Millbrook.

Daryl Joyner-Smith, residing at Munro Crescent, Southampton, appeared in the dock for sentence on Tuesday 3 November 2026 having been found guilty of rape by a jury on 2 October 2026.

The incident occurred following an evening out on Saturday 23 February 2019, when the complainant, now in her 40s, had been socialising with a group of friends in Southampton. Joyner-Smith, who had spent the evening with the group, accompanied the victim back to a property in the Millbrook area.

The court heard that the woman went to sleep in a bedroom and later woke during the night to find Joyner-Smith sexually assaulting and raping her. Despite repeatedly pleading with Joyner-Smith to stop, he disregarded her protests and continued the assault. During trial proceedings, jurors heard how the victim stared at a spot on the bedroom wall throughout the attack, wishing for the ordeal to end.

The survivor formally reported the crime to police, prompting an investigation by specialist detectives attached to Hampshire Constabulary’s Operation Amberstone rape investigation team. Following the collation of evidence and witness testimony, the Crown Prosecution Service authorised a charge of rape against Joyner-Smith.

Joyner-Smith denied the accusation and stood trial at Southampton Crown Court, where a jury rejected his account and returned a guilty verdict on:

One count of rape

Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, the complainant is protected by mandatory, lifelong statutory anonymity. Any publication, broadcast, or public dissemination of information capable of leading to her identification is strictly prohibited under UK law.

Sentencing Joyner-Smith, the presiding judge ordered him to serve an immediate prison term of eight years.

In addition to the custodial sentence, the court imposed a lifetime restraining order prohibiting Joyner-Smith from having any contact with the victim, and ordered him to comply with statutory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
