In 2024, a 32-year-old man from County Durham was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment at Newcastle Crown Court after being convicted of a series of non-recent child sex offences committed in Sunderland.

Scott Sly, of Dent Street, Hartlepool, appeared before the court for sentence on Friday 14 June 2024, having been convicted by a jury across all counts on the indictment.

The prosecution detailed how Sly targeted a school-aged girl more than two decades ago in the Sunderland area, subjecting her to repeated incidents of sexual assault and rape. Years after the offending took place, the survivor disclosed the crimes to Northumbria Police, initiating a formal inquiry by the force’s Safeguarding Department.

During police interviews under caution, Sly denied all involvement. Following evidential reviews, he was formally charged in January 2023. In March 2024, Sly stood trial at Newcastle Crown Court, where jurors rejected his defence and returned unanimous guilty verdicts on all 10 charges, which included multiple counts of rape, indecent assault, and sexual assault.

In a moving statement detailing the lifelong impact of the abuse, the survivor explained: “This has impacted on my life every day since the abuse – he has stolen my innocence. All I can do is think about the abuse; I do not have any happy days I think about like most children. As a result of this it has changed my attitude towards relationships with others and I struggle to build new relationships all because of him.”

Investigating officer Detective Constable Nicholas Moses praised the survivor’s courage in coming forward to relive traumatic events and ensure Sly faced justice, noting that the outcome demonstrates that it is never too late for victims of non-recent abuse to seek accountability.

Passing sentence, the Crown Court judge addressed the gravity of the predatory offending against a young child, imposing an immediate custodial term of 10 years’ imprisonment.

In addition to the custodial sentence, the court made Sly subject to lifetime notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register and granted an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim.
