A 55-year-old man from County Durham has been sentenced to six years’ imprisonment at York Crown Court after admitting to the rape of a woman during a trip to North Yorkshire.

Norman Carr, of Byron Street, Wheatley Hill, County Durham, appeared before the Recorder of York, Judge Sean Morris, for sentencing after entering a guilty plea to one count of rape.

The prosecution outlined that Carr had been staying in North Yorkshire for several days. While there, Carr consumed alcohol to intoxication and carried out a sexual assault against the female victim.

During the sentencing remarks, Judge Sean Morris addressed the profound trauma caused by the offence, telling the court that the victim could spend the rest of her life suffering the consequences of Carr’s criminality. The court heard that recovering from the assault could take years and that the survivor might never fully overcome the psychological impact. Judge Morris emphasized on the record that the victim bore absolutely no responsibility for what Carr had done.

The judge sentenced Carr to an immediate term of six years’ imprisonment. Under statutory provisions for determinate sentences involving serious sexual violence, Carr will serve a required portion of the sentence in custody behind bars before becoming eligible for consideration for release on licence under probation supervision.

To safeguard the survivor and monitor Carr upon release, the court imposed:

An indefinite requirement to register on the Sex Offenders Register for life

A lifetime restraining order banning any direct or indirect contact with the victim

An eight-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) placing conditions on his behaviour and enabling ongoing police management
