A 40-year-old Church of England vicar has been sentenced to nine years and seven months’ imprisonment at Leeds Crown Court after admitting to the repeated sexual assault of a three-year-old girl and the possession of extreme child abuse media.

Gordon Newton, of Huddersfield, who ministered in Batley, West Yorkshire, appeared for sentence following guilty pleas to an extensive indictment. The prosecution outlined that Newton had privately acknowledged harbouring a sexual interest in children over a prolonged period.

The offences were uncovered when Newton’s wife provided his previous mobile phone to police officers. Specialist forensic investigators examined the hardware and retrieved 276 indecent photographs and pseudo-photographs of children, comprising 70 Category A images depicting the most serious abuse. Analysis of the internet browsing logs demonstrated that Newton had conducted searches specifically attempting to source material involving children under three years of age. The court heard that the revelations severely impacted his wife’s mental health, resulting in depression and the total loss of her religious faith.

Newton formally pleaded guilty to 12 offences:

Six counts of sexual assault of a girl under 13

Six further offences under the Sexual Offences Act

Passing sentence, Judge Tom Bayliss KC addressed the gross violation of trust inherent in Newton’s ecclesiastical role, remarking:
“You held yourself out as a man of God but you’re nothing. You’re a hypocrite.”

The judge condemned the “extremely wicked series of acts” carried out against a three-year-old child, emphasizing the breach of trust against the victim, his spouse, the parishioners in his pastoral care, and church authorities.

Newton was sentenced to an immediate custodial term of nine years and seven months’ imprisonment. Under statutory provisions for serious sexual offences, he will serve at least two-thirds of the sentence in custody before being eligible to be considered for release on licence under probation supervision.

The court further ordered that Newton be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life, made him subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, and barred him permanently from engaging in regulated activity involving children or vulnerable adults.
