A 29-year-old man from Norwich has been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment at Norwich Crown Court after being convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a woman who fell asleep after becoming unwell at a house party.
Monwar Hussain, of Marauder Road, Norwich, appeared for sentence on Friday 24 July 2026 following an extensive inquiry conducted by Norfolk Police.
The prosecution outlined that the attack took place on the morning of 14 March 2020 following a social gathering the previous evening. The complainant had been on a night out with friends in Norwich on 13 March before going on to attend a house party.
During the party, the woman became unwell. Her friends arranged for a taxi to take her home safely. At that point, Hussain—also known by the alias “Rak”—who had also been present at the gathering, offered to accompany her and share the taxi journey.
The woman fell asleep upon returning to the address. She awoke the following morning to discover Hussain carrying out a sexual assault and raping her.
Norfolk Police launched a criminal investigation into the report. Evidential enquiries led to the formal identification of Hussain as the suspect, resulting in charges being authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service in August 2024.
Hussain entered not guilty pleas to all charges, forcing the survivor to endure the criminal trial process. Following a trial at Norwich Crown Court in April 2026, the jury dismissed Hussain’s denials and returned unanimous guilty verdicts on all four counts on the indictment:
Two counts of rape
One count of attempted rape
One count of assault by penetration
Following the conclusion of the case, the survivor stated that she felt justice had finally been served after waiting more than six years since the attack took place.
Passing sentence on 24 July 2026, the Crown Court judge handed Hussain an immediate custodial term of seven years’ imprisonment. To safeguard the survivor permanently, the court also imposed an indefinite restraining order barring Hussain from contacting or approaching her in any manner, alongside lifetime notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register.
Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, all victims and complainants connected to sexual offence proceedings are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any details, names, addresses, or photographs capable of leading to public identification is strictly prohibited under UK law.
Hussain stood convicted of:
Two counts of rape
Attempted rape
Assault by penetration
Sentencing outcome and statutory measures:
Seven years’ immediate custody
Indefinite restraining order protecting the victim
Mandatory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register for life under the Sexual Offences Act 2003
Strict post-custodial statutory licence supervision conditions enforceable upon release from custody
