A 21-year-old convicted sex offender from Birmingham has had six months added to his prison sentence at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court after subjecting two dogs to severe starvation and medical neglect, resulting in the collapse and death of a nine-month-old puppy.

Kieran Dunkley, of Birmingham, appeared for sentence on 23 September 2026 following an animal cruelty inquiry conducted by the RSPCA. Dunkley was already an inmate at HMP Brinsford, serving a custodial sentence for breaching the statutory terms of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).

The animal welfare prosecution commenced in January 2025 when the mother of Dunkley’s partner took two dogs to a veterinary clinic. The animals—a nine-month-old labrador cross named Lola and a two-year-old bull cross named Reggie—were in an advanced state of physical deterioration.

Upon arrival, Lola was completely collapsed and unable to stand. The examining veterinary surgeon determined that the young dog was so severely emaciated, with zero residual body fat and all prominent skeletal features visible, that her condition was irreparable. She was put down on welfare grounds to bring an end to her suffering.

Reggie was also discovered in an emaciated condition. The veterinary assessment revealed that the bull cross was suffering from an untreated ear infection characterized by visible discharge and active inflammation that would have been obvious to any reasonable keeper. Reggie also displayed prominent pressure sores across his hind legs, which investigators noted provided stark physical evidence of prolonged confinement in unsuitable, neglected living conditions.

The veterinary report confirmed both canines had endured substantial unnecessary pain and suffering between December 2024 and January 2025 due to the complete failure to supply a nutritionally adequate diet or secure timely veterinary treatment.

RSPCA Inspector Laura Brewerton remarked: “The level of suffering endured by these dogs was heartbreaking. Pet owners have an absolute legal and moral duty of care to protect animals under their control from pain, malnutrition, injury, and disease. Failing to provide basic food and leaving an animal to collapse is entirely unacceptable.”

Dunkley pleaded guilty to:

Two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal

One count of failing to meet an animal’s duty of care to be protected from pain and suffering

Passing sentence on 23 September 2026, the magistrates handed Dunkley an immediate six-month prison sentence to be served consecutively to his existing prison term at HMP Brinsford.

Alongside the custodial sentence, the court ordered:

A 10-year disqualification order under Section 34 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, prohibiting Dunkley from owning, keeping, or participating in the care of animals

A financial penalty of £350

Reggie was formally signed over into the legal custody of the RSPCA, nursed back to full physical health, and has since been permanently rehomed.
