A 62-year-old senior project manager has been sentenced to eight years and six months’ imprisonment at Truro Crown Court after being convicted of two counts of rape against a young woman.

Mark Talling, of St Austell, Cornwall, appeared for sentence following a Crown Court trial arising from an inquiry conducted by Devon and Cornwall Police.

The court was told that the victim had previously regarded Talling with respect and trust, despite him being decades older than her. Following an evening out at a nightclub, Talling carried out the sexual assaults. The trauma of the incident was further intensified by sexually explicit photographs taken prior to the rapes.

In personal testimony delivered to the court, the complainant outlined the catastrophic impact the offences had had on her mental health and future prospects. She detailed enduring depression, suicidal ideation, fractured personal relationships, and the abandonment of the career path she had spent years preparing for. She explained: “I have spent eight years of my life in fear.”

The severe emotional distress caused a four-year delay before she felt able to report the offences to the police. Further systemic delays ensued before the case was listed for trial. Throughout proceedings, Talling maintained a complete denial of responsibility.

Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992 and Section 49 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933, all victims of sexual offences are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any details, names, addresses, educational facilities, or photographs capable of leading to the public identification of the victim is strictly prohibited under UK law.

A jury found Talling guilty of:

Two counts of rape

Passing sentence, Judge James Adkin observed that the victim had suffered severe psychological harm, described the extended timeframe in bringing the proceedings to a conclusion as unacceptable, and handed down an immediate custodial sentence of eight years and six months’ imprisonment.

Alongside the custodial term, the court imposed:

Indefinite notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register for life under the Sexual Offences Act 2003

Strict post-custody licence supervision conditions upon release
