An 86-year-old former Leicestershire Constabulary officer who raped a teenage schoolgirl after visiting her home on a welfare check has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment at Leicester Crown Court.
Barry Grummett, of Hathern, Leicestershire, appeared for sentence on Friday 9 October 2026 after being convicted by a jury following a non-recent sexual offences inquiry conducted by Leicestershire Police.
The court was told that Grummett served with Leicestershire Constabulary from September 1970 until October 1981. In 1977, while on duty, he attended a residential property in Leicestershire to conduct inquiries into why a teenage girl had been absent from school. While alone inside the house with the child, Grummett carried out a rape. Over the following 18 months, he returned to the property on repeated occasions and subjected her to further sexual assaults.
The indictment also included an offence against a second victim, involving the indecent assault of an adult woman at a separate address during the late 1970s while the two were alone. That incident was not believed to have occurred while Grummett was on duty.
The offending was reported to Leicestershire Police in 2023. Detectives interviewed Grummett under caution, where he denied all accusations. The matter proceeded to trial at Leicester Crown Court, where jurors rejected his claims and returned guilty verdicts on 1 October 2026.
Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992 and Section 49 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933, all victims of sexual offences and child complainants are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any details, names, addresses, educational institutions, or photographs capable of leading to the public identification of protected individuals is strictly prohibited under UK law.
A jury convicted Grummett of:
- One count of rape
- Three counts of indecent assault
Passing sentence on 9 October 2026, the Crown Court judge handed Grummett an immediate custodial sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment.
Alongside the prison sentence, the court imposed:
- Indefinite notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register for life under the Sexual Offences Act 2003
- Statutory post-custody licence conditions and supervision
