A 34-year-old father has been sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment at Cardiff Crown Court after inflicting catastrophic brain damage on his eight-week-old son, leaving the child with permanent, life-limiting disabilities.
Adam Edwards, of Blaina, Blaenau Gwent, appeared for sentence alongside the infant’s mother, Brogan Jones, of Nantyglo, Blaenau Gwent, following an investigation into severe child abuse by Gwent Police.
The court heard that Edwards carried out a series of assaults on the infant in May and June 2023. Weeks prior to the catastrophic head injuries, Edwards fractured the boy’s right humerus by twisting or bending the arm bone with substantial force. In an effort to conceal the trauma, Edwards and Jones cancelled a planned midwife visit by falsely claiming the household was suffering from a stomach bug.
On 16 June 2023, Edwards subjected the eight-week-old infant to severe head impacts and shaking, fracturing the child’s skull in two places and causing devastating intracranial trauma. Rather than dialling 999 for emergency medical assistance, Edwards and Jones engaged in a protracted domestic argument, shouting insults at one another while the baby lay critically injured. A neighbour alerted by the disturbance entered the property and found the baby dazed and staring blankly. The parents subsequently provided false accounts during police interviews to evade detection.
Medical evidence revealed that the child, now aged three, was left with severe cerebral palsy, profound blindness due to impaired brain connections, and persistent daily seizures. He requires feeding via a stomach tube for 22 hours each day and depends upon round-the-clock specialist care from his foster family.
Under the provisions of Section 49 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933, the child victim is protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any details, names, addresses, or photographs capable of leading to the public identification of the child is strictly prohibited under UK law.
Edwards was convicted of:
- Inflicting grievous bodily harm
- Causing or allowing a child to suffer serious physical harm
- Child neglect
- Jones was acquitted of grievous bodily harm but convicted of:
- Causing or allowing a child to suffer serious physical harm
- Child neglect
Sentencing Edwards, Judge Daniel Williams imposed an immediate custodial sentence of nine years’ imprisonment.
Jones received a three-year custodial sentence suspended for three years, with conditions requiring the completion of 250 hours of unpaid work and designated rehabilitation requirements, with the court noting she had been subjected to significant domestic abuse by Edwards.
