A 45-year-old man from Sutton St Nicholas has been handed a 23-year extended sentence after a judge ruled his ten-year campaign of rape, violence, and webcam exploitation came close to warranting a life sentence.

Michael Pugh appeared via video link from HMP Hewell for sentence on Friday 2 October 2026. The proceedings concluded an extensive investigation by West Mercia Police into sustained domestic, sexual, and physical abuse spanning a decade.

The court was told that Pugh subjected the victim to repeated sexual attacks, severe physical abuse, and coercive control. Prosecutor Harinderpal Dhami described how Pugh commercially exploited the victim by compelling them to perform on webcams and take part in online sexual messaging services throughout the day and night to produce financial earnings for him.

Statements provided to investigators revealed the scale of the abuse, with the complainant explaining there were “too many incidents to recall” and recalling the fear experienced while being pinned down by Pugh. Records before the court showed Pugh had a previous conviction recorded in 2018 for making indecent images of children.

Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992 and Section 49 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933, victims of sexual offences are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any information, names, addresses, or images capable of identifying the complainant across digital, print, or broadcast media is strictly prohibited under UK law.

Pugh was sentenced on 16 charges:

Six counts of rape

Four counts of sexual assault

Four counts of adult sexual activity with a person aged 13 to 17

One count of inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent

One count of controlling or coercive behaviour

Judge Andrew Lockhart KC designated Pugh as a dangerous offender under statutory criteria, finding that he posed a significant risk of causing serious harm through the commission of further specified offences.

The judge handed down an extended determinate sentence of 23 years, consisting of 15 years in immediate prison custody and an extended licence period of eight years. Under UK statutory sentencing provisions for dangerous offenders convicted of serious sexual offences, Pugh is required to serve at least two-thirds of the 15-year custodial term—ten years—in prison custody before he can be considered by the Parole Board for release on licence. Release at that threshold is discretionary, and he will remain subject to strict probation supervision and recall until the full 23-year term expires.

Alongside the extended sentence, the court ordered:

A lifetime restraining order barring any contact with the victim

A 25-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) placing enforceable restrictions on his conduct

Mandatory lifetime notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register under the provisions of the Sexual Offences Act 2003
