Sergiu Chiriac, a Romanian national residing in Streatham Hill, south London, has been sentenced to an extended sentence of 24 years at Inner London Crown Court following a protracted campaign of violent domestic abuse, sexual violence, and cruelty towards a young child.

The criminal investigation commenced on 31 March 2025 when the female victim sought emergency refuge at the home of a relative. The woman presented with severe cranial swelling, two blackened eyes, and extensive bodily contusions. Concerned for the immediate welfare of the woman and her two-year-old child, the relative contacted emergency services.

Metropolitan Police officers deployed to Chiriac’s property in Streatham Hill discovered evidential signs of a major violent altercation, including bloodstains across one of the rooms. Detectives established that on the preceding day, Chiriac had subjected both the woman and her toddler to a physical assault, during which he brandished a knife, made verbal threats to kill, and prevented her from leaving the address.

Under UK legislation, all victims of sexual offences are protected by lifelong statutory anonymity.

Following the initial arrest, specialist safeguarding detectives worked with the victim to build trust. Over subsequent weeks, the survivor disclosed an extensive, multi-year history of abuse dating from 2021 to 2025. The disclosures detailed repeated acts of non-fatal strangulation, systematic coercive control, physical beatings, and multiple rapes. The additional evidence enabled prosecutors to charge Chiriac with a wide-ranging indictment in September 2025.

Following a trial at Inner London Crown Court, a jury convicted Chiriac on 4 February of 12 distinct criminal charges:

  • Three counts of rape
  • Three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH)
  • Non-fatal strangulation
  • Controlling and coercive behaviour
  • Child cruelty
  • Assault on a child
  • Witness intimidation
  • Criminal damage

Returning to Inner London Crown Court for sentencing on Friday, 2 October, the presiding judge classified Chiriac as a dangerous offender under statutory criteria and passed an extended determinate sentence of 24 years. The sentence consists of an immediate custodial term of 20 years’ imprisonment, followed by an extended licence period of four years.

Under legislation governing extended sentences for serious violent and sexual offences, Chiriac must serve at least two-thirds of the 20-year custodial element before becoming eligible to apply for parole. He was also made subject to lifetime notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register and protective restraining orders.
