Aaron Roy Forsythe Gardner has been sentenced to life imprisonment at the Royal Court of Jersey after being convicted of grooming and raping a very young child.
The prosecution followed an investigation that began when the young victim made troubling disclosures during toilet training.
The child subsequently revealed graphic details to parents, describing how Gardner had repeatedly touched them inappropriately and forced them to take part in sexual acts against their will.
Medical and psychological assessments confirmed that the abuse caused severe psychological harm to the child and immense distress to the family.
Gardner contested the charges, attempting to rely on what the court described as a carefully crafted narrative designed to present himself as innocent.
However, following a five-day trial in June 2026, the court rejected his defence and convicted him of three serious sexual offences, including the rape of a child.
At his sentencing hearing, Commissioner Patricia Lees described Gardner as a “highly dangerous sexual offender” who continues to pose a grave, significant risk to young children.
The judge noted that Gardner had never accepted responsibility for his crimes, had shown no remorse, and had exhibited no inclination to engage with rehabilitation or reduce his risk of reoffending.
Throughout the proceedings, Gardner remained with his head bowed, refusing to look towards the victim’s relatives.
Commissioner Lees sentenced Gardner to life imprisonment, specifying a minimum custodial tariff of 14 years, less time spent remanded in custody, before he can be considered for statutory release on licence.
Release Calculation: Under life sentence provisions, Gardner will not be eligible for automatic release. He must serve the entire 14-year minimum tariff in prison custody before he can apply to the relevant parole authorities for release. Release will only be granted if the parole board determines that he no longer poses a risk of harm to the public. If released, Gardner will remain on licence subject to strict recall conditions for the remainder of his natural life.
