Owen Cork, aged 25, of Eastmoor Road, Newport, has been sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment at Cardiff Crown Court after police uncovered a massive digital collection of child sexual abuse images and evidence of predatory online messaging directed at children.
The investigation began on 15 October last year when officers from Gwent Police executed a search warrant at the residential address Cork shared with his partner and young child, following intelligence regarding a Snapchat account linked to his identity.
During the search, Cork attempted to deflect responsibility, telling officers he believed his accounts had been compromised by outside hackers and insisting he had no involvement with illegal material.
However, a systematic search of the property led officers to seize multiple digital devices, including two electronic tablets.
One of the Samsung devices was recovered directly from inside his young child’s bedroom.
Prosecutor Sophie Keegan informed the court that specialist cyber investigators discovered PIN-protected secure folders on the devices.
Although Cork claimed ignorance regarding the encrypted storage, forensic specialists bypassed the security protocols, uncovering a catalogue of illicit material that included footage depicting the rape of a young boy aged between eight and ten.
In total, forensic analysts catalogued:
- 451 Category A images (the highest severity legal tier)
- 260 Category B images
- 90 Category C images
- Extreme pornography depicting humans abusing animals
The investigation exposed active offending beyond data possession.
Detectives recovered three separate messaging threads on the Samsung tablet where Cork had engaged with users who appeared to be children under the age of 16.
In one exchange with an apparent 15-year-old boy, Cork transmitted naked photographs of himself alongside sexually explicit comments.
In another discussion, he asked a young boy whether he would be willing to trade nude photographs.
Cork also initiated contact with an apparent 14-year-old girl, interrogating her regarding her sexual preferences before transmitting unsolicited naked images of himself.
Digital evidence further established that Cork had distributed two Category A images via the Telegram communications app, including material depicting the rape of a young girl aged between eight and ten, and had openly told another adult online that he preferred children “young”.
Cork appeared before Cardiff Crown Court and entered guilty pleas to:
- Making indecent images of children
- Distributing indecent images of children
- Attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child
Judge Jeremy Jenkins sentenced Cork to an immediate custodial term of 24 months (two years).
The judge also made Cork subject to the notification requirements of the Sex Offenders Register for a duration of 10 years and imposed a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) placing strict conditions on his device ownership, internet capabilities, and access to children.
Release Calculation: Under UK determinate sentencing legislation governing standard custodial sentences under seven years, statutory release applies at the halfway point. Cork will serve one-half (12 months) of his 24-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for automatic release on licence to serve the remainder of the term under the supervision of the Probation Service.
