John Stanley Twyman, aged 28, of no fixed abode in Hull, East Yorkshire, has been sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment at Hull Crown Court after being convicted of rape alongside sustained domestic abuse and breaching court orders.
The prosecution followed an emergency response initiated in June 2025 when Humberside Police’s Force Control Room received a 999 telephone call from a distressed woman.
The victim reported that she had been subjected to repeated physical assaults, severe verbal denigration, controlling behaviour, and rape over several years, identifying Twyman as the perpetrator.
Patrol officers were deployed immediately, locating and arresting Twyman on the same day on suspicion of assault, rape, and breaching an active Restraining Order.
During formal police interviews, Twyman rejected the accusations, attempting to deflect culpability by asserting that he was the party being manipulated and claiming the victim was deliberately attempting to instigate conflict.
He was charged the following day and remanded into prison custody.
Prior to trial, Twyman entered guilty pleas to charges of assault and breaching a Restraining Order.
However, he entered a not guilty plea to the charge of rape.
The case proceeded to a Crown Court trial that concluded on Thursday, 27 April 2026, where the jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict for rape.
Detective Constable Jan Baldwin, of Humberside Police’s Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) Unit, praised the victim’s resilience throughout the legal process: “We wouldn’t be here today without the bravery and strength shown by the woman who took that first step to report the brutality she had been experiencing at the hands of Twyman over a prolonged period of time. Twyman was unrelenting in his behaviour towards the woman and since he was first arrested and throughout the investigation, he has shown no remorse for the long-lasting impact his actions have and continue to have on her. I am reassured that this dangerous man is off our streets and will be for a very long time.”
On Friday, 11 September 2026, the court sentenced Twyman to an immediate custodial term of 13 years (156 months).
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing determinate sentences of seven years or more for serious sexual offences, statutory release at the halfway mark does not apply. Twyman is required to serve a mandatory minimum of two-thirds (104 months / eight years and eight months) of his 13-year sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible to apply for statutory release on licence. Upon release, he will remain subject to strict licence conditions and supervision by the Probation Service in the community for the remainder of the 13-year term.
