Shane Jenkin, of Hayle, Cornwall, who gouged out his partner’s eyes during a horrific 12-hour attack that left her permanently blind, could soon be released into the community after being transferred to a Category D open prison.
The case dates back to 2012, when Jenkin appeared before the Crown Court and was sentenced to life imprisonment, with the presiding judge setting a minimum custodial term of six years.
The court heard that the 18-stone abuser subjected his partner to an ordeal of extreme violence inside their home.
Jenkin held the victim captive for 12 hours, repeatedly strangling her until she was close to passing out, and delivering heavy punches that fractured both her nose and jaw.
The attack culminated in Jenkin using his fingers to gouge out both of her eyes, completely destroying her sight.
The victim’s two young children, then aged 13 and three, were asleep in the same residence throughout the assault.
Following the blinding, Jenkin actively refused to contact an ambulance or seek medical help for the critically injured woman.
Treating surgeons and hospital doctors later informed the survivor that the attack had been carried out with such extreme physical force that visible fingernail impressions remained inside her eye sockets.
Although Jenkin became eligible to apply for parole upon the expiration of his six-year minimum tariff in 2018, the Parole Board repeatedly determined that he remained too dangerous for release, rejecting his bids on six separate occasions.
However, 14 years after the horrific crime, Jenkin was approved for transfer to a Category D open prison at the beginning of March last year.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing mandatory and discretionary life sentences, an offender cannot be considered for open conditions or release until their minimum custodial tariff has elapsed. Following his progression to Category D open conditions, Jenkin is currently being assessed for suitability for release into the community. If directed for release by the Parole Board, Jenkin will remain subject to life licence conditions and indefinite probation supervision, leaving him liable to immediate recall to closed prison custody should he breach any terms of his release.
