Paul Benstock, then aged 62, of Appletree Court, East Ardsley, West Yorkshire, was sentenced to 37 years’ imprisonment at Leeds Crown Court on Friday, 11 September, after being convicted of an extensive catalogue of more than 40 sexual and physical offences spanning over two decades.
The sentencing concludes a protracted safeguarding operation conducted by West Yorkshire Police’s Leeds Safeguarding Unit working in close partnership with the National Crime Agency’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command (CEOP).
The investigation began in 2020 when a survivor made the decision to approach the police to report historical and sustained abuse inflicted by Benstock.
Specialist safeguarding detectives launched comprehensive inquiries, successfully identifying four additional victims who had suffered physical and sexual violence at the hands of the defendant.
The court was told that Benstock carried out the offences between 1998 and 2020, targeting five individuals in total.
A significant proportion of his predatory conduct was committed against victims who were children at the time of the offences.
Parallel inquiries conducted by the NCA’s CEOP Command revealed that Benstock was also actively engaged in the production and making of indecent images of children.
Benstock consistently refused to acknowledge his culpability, denying all allegations during police interviews and forcing each of his victims to give evidence during a multi-week trial at Leeds Crown Court in July.
On 16 July, the jury dismissed his claims, returning guilty verdicts on more than 40 counts, including 14 counts of rape, multiple counts of physical assault, and making indecent images of children.
Detective Sergeant Michelle Barnes, of the Leeds Safeguarding Unit, commended the victims for demonstrating remarkable courage throughout the inquiry and subsequent trial, highlighting that their testimony was instrumental in securing justice and ensuring Benstock was held accountable for his crimes.
On Friday, 11 September, the presiding judge handed Benstock an immediate custodial sentence of 37 years (444 months).
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court made Benstock subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and directed that he comply with the statutory notification requirements of the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing determinate custodial sentences of seven years or more for serious sexual offences, Benstock is not eligible for release at the standard halfway mark. He is required to serve a minimum of two-thirds (296 months / 24 years and eight months) of his 37-year term in prison custody before becoming eligible to submit an application to the Parole Board for release on licence. If approved for release, Benstock will serve the remainder of the sentence under strict probation supervision in the community until the expiration of the full 37-year term.
