James Eves, then aged 51, of Waltham Road, Boreham, Chelmsford, Essex, has been sentenced to six years and eight months’ imprisonment at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday, 10 September, after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a teenage girl in Widnes, Cheshire.
The case originated under unusual circumstances in February 2025, when Eves presented himself at the front counter of Widnes Police Station and informed officers that he had recently carried out a sexual assault against a young girl.
Eves was arrested at the station while safeguarding detectives made immediate contact with the victim.
Specialist officers conducted an interview with the teenager, who disclosed that she had been subjected to sexual abuse by Eves.
Despite his initial spontaneous disclosure at the police station, Eves declined to cooperate further once taken into custody, offering no comment responses to all questions put to him by detectives during formal recorded interviews.
Detectives from Cheshire Police built a comprehensive prosecution file, ultimately compelling Eves to enter guilty pleas when brought before Liverpool Crown Court on three counts:
- Engaging in sexual activity with a child
- Sexually assaulting a child by penetration
- Inciting a child to engage in sexual activity
Detective Sergeant Dan Argent expressed gratitude for the lengthy custodial sentence, noting that Eves had exploited a young girl for his own twisted sexual gratification and knew his conduct was criminal.
Sergeant Michaela Flynn commended the victim for demonstrating exceptional courage throughout the criminal inquiry and court process, emphasizing that her bravery enabled police to remove a dangerous perpetrator from the community.
The presiding judge sentenced Eves to an immediate custodial sentence of six years and eight months (80 months).
The court also made Eves subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to restrict his future conduct, issued a restraining order preventing any direct or indirect contact with the victim, and ordered him to comply with the statutory notification requirements of the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely for life.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing standard determinate custodial sentences under seven years, Eves is entitled to automatic statutory release on licence at the halfway mark. He is required to serve one-half (40 months / three years and four months) of his 80-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for release on licence. Upon release, Eves will serve the remaining balance of his sentence under strict supervision by the Probation Service in the community until the expiration of the full six-year and eight-month term.
