In this report from May 2021, Daniel Brian Baines, aged 29, of Ganton Place, York, North Yorkshire, was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment at York Crown Court on Monday, 17 May 2021, after being convicted of 18 child sexual offences against four victims.
The criminal investigation commenced following reports of sustained, historical child sexual abuse.
The court heard that Baines carried out repeated sexual attacks against four separate children over several years.
The victims were unaware that Baines had abused other children until they independently disclosed the abuse to North Yorkshire Police and gave formal statements.
During the sentencing hearing, the court heard victim personal statements describing the enduring psychological damage, ruined childhoods, and ongoing relationship trauma caused by Baines’ actions.
Baines entered not guilty pleas across the indictment, requiring all four victims to attend court and give evidence during a jury trial.
Following deliberations, the jury convicted Baines of:
- Two counts of rape
- 13 counts of sexual assault
- One count of indecent assault
- Two counts of indecency with a child
The Recorder of York, Judge Sean Morris, sentenced Baines to a total custodial sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment (240 months) and ordered lifetime registration on the Sex Offenders Register.
The court also identified Baines as an offender of special concern under sentencing provisions, adding an additional one-year statutory licence supervision period upon release.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing sexual offences, Baines is required to serve two-thirds (160 months / 13 years and 4 months) of his 20-year sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for statutory release on licence. His projected release date is September 2034, following which he will remain subject to licence conditions and extended statutory supervision in the community.
