Edward Stanton, of Earle Road, Wavertree, Liverpool, has been sentenced to three and a half years’ imprisonment (42 months) at Liverpool Crown Court following his conviction for historical sexual offences committed against a boy in residential care.
The prosecution arose after Merseyside Police investigated non-recent abuse allegations dating back to 1981 at St Vincents Children’s Home in Formby, where Stanton was employed as a house master.
The court heard that the victim was a vulnerable 13-year-old boy who had been placed into the home from a dysfunctional family background.
Stanton subjected the child to sexual abuse, exercising a level of control and intimidation that caused the boy to repeatedly run away from the premises and sleep rough in freezing temperatures rather than remain at the facility.
In a victim personal statement presented by prosecutor David Polglase, the survivor described how the abuse had ruined his life, resulting in long-term depression, self-harm, psychiatric care, and chronic night terrors into adulthood.
The matter was reported to Merseyside Police in 2017 after the victim confided in his wife, leading to Stanton’s arrest in 2018.
The court was told that Stanton had a prolific record of sexual offending against children. In 1996, he received a 13-year prison sentence for sexually abusing seven boys at the St Vincents home. He was subsequently jailed in 2013 and 2016 for possessing indecent images of children, and again in 2018 for breaching a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO).
Stanton pleaded not guilty to the charges, but following a trial, the jury convicted him of:

The presiding judge handed Stanton a total custodial sentence of three and a half years’ imprisonment (42 months).
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing sexual offences, Stanton is required to serve two-thirds (28 months / 2 years and 4 months) of his 42-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for statutory release on licence, serving the remaining 14 months under community supervision.
