Johnathan Matthew, aged 30, of Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment at Grimsby Crown Court on Friday, 14 August 2026, after being convicted of rape and breaching his sex offender registration requirements.
The court heard that Matthew attacked and raped a woman whilst she was sleeping. Humberside Police launched an investigation into the report, resulting in Matthew being arrested and charged on Monday, 9 February 2026.
On 16 March 2026, Matthew entered guilty pleas to criminal damage and failing to comply with his Sex Offender Registration requirements. However, he maintained denials regarding the sexual offences throughout legal proceedings, forcing the case to a crown court trial.
On Friday, 17 July 2026, a jury at Grimsby Crown Court returned a guilty verdict on the charge of rape, while finding him not guilty of sexual assault by penetration. Matthew was remanded into custody ahead of his sentencing hearing.
Appearing before Grimsby Crown Court on 14 August 2026, Matthew was sentenced for:
- One count of rape
- One count of criminal damage
- One count of breaching Sex Offender Registration requirements
The presiding judge handed Matthew a total custodial term of 10 years’ imprisonment and ordered that he remain on the sex offenders register for life.
