Michael Francis, then aged 31, formerly of Teesside, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison at Newcastle Crown Court for a series of violent domestic abuse offences against a former partner in County Durham.
The court heard that Francis subjected his victim to repeated physical and psychological abuse over several months. In one incident near Witton-le-Wear, Francis dragged the woman from a car in a secluded location and carried out a sustained physical assault.
Durham Constabulary launched a full investigation after the victim escaped the abusive relationship and sought safety at a refuge. Detectives compiled medical evidence and victim impact statements detailing the severe post-traumatic stress disorder and psychological harm she suffered.
Francis denied the charges, requiring a two-week trial at Newcastle Crown Court where a jury convicted him of four counts of assault and two counts of criminal damage.
In November 2022, the judge categorized Francis as a dangerous offender and sentenced him to 15 years’ imprisonment. Francis must serve a minimum of 10 years in custody before becoming eligible to apply for parole, and will serve a two-year extended licence period upon release.
