In 2021, Cliff Butler, a then 46-year-old repeat offender from Worcester, was sentenced at Hereford Crown Court following a digital forensics investigation into the downloading of illicit media.
Cliff Butler, of Primrose Crescent, St Peter’s, Worcester, appeared before Judge Martin Jackson after pleading guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. The court heard that Butler downloaded over 2,000 illicit images and videos between January 2019 and January 2021, including over 800 files classified within Category A. Prosecutors detailed how an examination of his electronic devices revealed material involving infants and young children, with Butler having previous convictions for similar digital offences in 2011 and a subsequent breach of notification requirements in 2015.
Police officers seized a Samsung mobile phone containing the illicit files during their investigation. Defence counsel highlighted his early admissions in court, after which Judge Jackson sentenced Butler to a three-year community order, 35 days of rehabilitation activity requirement, and a three-month electronically monitored curfew between 7 pm and 7 am. The court also ordered the forfeiture of his mobile device and imposed financial penalties.
In addition to his community sentence, Butler was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years.
He was also made subject to a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to ensure ongoing monitoring of his digital devices and internet usage.
