In 2021, Vernon Pickett, a then 52-year-old man from Basildon, was jailed following an Essex Police investigation into serious sexual offences committed against a child.
Vernon Pickett, of Waldringfield, Basildon, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after being convicted of charges including attempted rape, sexual assault, forcing a child to perform a sexual act, and making indecent images of children. The offences occurred in the Basildon area between July and August 2020 before being disclosed to law enforcement officers.
The abuse came to light when the victim reported the incidents to the police, prompting an immediate investigation and forensic analysis of Pickett’s electronic devices. Specialist officers discovered a stash of over 3,000 indecent images and videos on various devices, alongside internet search histories targeting young girls. Furthermore, investigators recovered 28 separate video recordings on his mobile phone depicting the sexual abuse, providing irrefutable digital evidence for the prosecution team.
In addition to his 12-year custodial sentence, Pickett was placed on the Sex Offenders Register. He was also subject to ongoing legal restrictions upon release, including court-ordered measures to monitor his behaviour and protect the public.
