After the inevitable knockout last night, we have compiled a glorious list of England’s achievements in both the FIFA World Cup competitions and the UEFA Euro ones.
Being of an age that remembers the 1982 World Cup, which did not feature England as we did not even qualify, we wonder how anyone of our age could think that football is coming home? Beyond the traditional patriotic necessity to support our country’s team.
It seems like the behaviour of a compulsive gambler on the slots, where they are set up in the casino’s favour and designed for the gambler to lose. The gambler thinks, “This time I will hit the jackpot, and all my previous losses will not matter,” and keeps putting in his money.
A non-gambler would see the compulsive gambler’s behaviour as insanity, to keep doing the same thing and expecting different results, yet somehow the football fan who believes that football is coming home is considered sane!?
Eventually, if the gambler has enough money, they will hit a jackpot of sorts. Maybe comparable to the England fan who, if they live long enough, may see England win some kind of International tournament.
We can all look forward to getting our asses handed to us by France now in the 3rd-place match… just to rub it in… sigh…cue Baddiel and Skinner song 🙁
