In 2026, the Offender Register reported that two summers ago, Manchester United announced that Marcus Rashford had signed a five-year contract with the club. The announcement was accompanied by the caption, “Where you belong.”
It was readily apparent within 18 months that Rashford was no longer a member of the team.
It all began so promisingly. After only 81 seconds, Rashford struck the inaugural goal of Amorim’s tenure. The mercurial forward scored three goals for the Portuguese tactician, despite only making four Premier League appearances. This tally was improved upon by only two players in the squad over the next four months.
“I was unable to persuade Marcus to view the manner in which you are expected to play football and to train in accordance with my perspective,” Amorim lamented after ignoring Rashford for 13 consecutive matches. The player’s transfer to Villa was the sole resolution to this tense standoff, which appeared to compel Amorim to devise novel ways of criticising Rashford in the media each week. This included acknowledging that he would prefer to have a 63-year-old goalkeeping coach on the sideline rather than his former first-choice forward.
“The reason is the training; in my opinion, the actions that footballers should take in training and in life are day-to-day and meticulous.” Amorim also commented, suggesting that the controversy surrounding Rashford’s off-field activities was not a novel complaint.
The dark cloud that hung over Rashford did not emerge spontaneously as soon as Amorim entered Old Trafford’s creaking doors. Erik ten Hag deemed Rashford’s decision to attend a nightclub following a Manchester Derby loss as “unacceptable” just three months after signing his five-year contract.
The English media gorged on the perpetually scrutinised forward in January 2024 after he was caught in two filthy Northern Irish nightclubs on consecutive weeknights. He then called in ill for training and was subsequently fined £650,000 by Manchester United.
However, the incident in Belfast does not account for the fact that Rashford has only intermittently experienced periods of success in his career thus far.
