In 2019, the Offender Database recorded that Grant McShane, then 26, of Northam Close, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, was jailed for the “predatory” abduction and sexual assault of a 15-year-old schoolgirl. On Monday, 13 May 2019, McShane appeared at Ipswich Crown Court, where he was handed a six-year custodial sentence. The court heard that the defendant targeted the victim while she was on a family holiday at Centre Parcs Elveden Forest, Suffolk.

The investigation established that McShane groomed the girl via social media after meeting her through a friend. While she was at Centre Parcs in February 2019, he persuaded her to meet him at the security entrance at 5:00 pm. He then drove her to a secluded track where he plied her with a large bottle of vodka and cocaine before sexually assaulting her. The victim was missing for more than four hours before McShane returned her to the holiday park in Elveden, Suffolk, at 9:30 pm.

Judicial Findings and Investigative Detail

The court reported that McShane utilised “premeditated, coercive, and controlling” tactics to manipulate the teenager. Ipswich Crown Court heard that he told the girl he loved her and promised to buy her a car as part of his grooming strategy. Judge Rupert Overbury noted that the defendant’s behaviour was entirely predatory, moving from digital grooming to physical abduction and the provision of Class A drugs. At the time of his arrest, McShane was also found in possession of cannabis, pepper spray, and a knuckleduster.

The judge noted that McShane had continued to contact the girl even after a previous arrest in January 2019 on suspicion of sexual offences. For his actions in Elveden, Suffolk, he pleaded guilty to abduction, two counts of sexual activity with a child, possession of cannabis, and possession of prohibited weapons. The prosecution, led by Joanne Eley, reported that the defendant’s brazen decision to abduct the child from a family holiday park underscored the high risk he posed to public safety in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his crimes in England, Grant McShane was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: Six years in prison.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements were activated.
  • SHPO: A Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
  • Judicial Oversight: Sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court following guilty pleas to six counts.

Monitoring and Public Protection

McShane is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Suffolk Constabulary, and the prison estate. Due to the nature of the abduction at Centre Parcs Elveden Forest and the use of Class A drugs in Suffolk, his management is subject to the highest level of oversight by the Public Protection Unit.

As a member of the Sex Offenders Register, McShane must comply with notification requirements regarding his residence in Northam Close, Peterborough, for the duration of his registration. Authorities state that his SHPO is a critical tool for monitoring his access to social media and preventing further grooming activities. Any breach of his registration conditions, the SHPO, or his licence terms upon release will result in immediate arrest and a return to Ipswich Crown Court.
